Get more out of your fireplace with the Swiss heating method
06/11/2024
Want to stoke more efficiently while reducing particulate emissions? The Swiss stoking method helps you reduce smoke and get more heat from your fireplace. By stoking from above, you create a more efficient and cleaner fire. M-Design explains step by step how you can do this yourself.
Step by step: how to fire with the Swiss method
- Start with the largest logs
First place the large logs at the bottom of the fireplace. Make sure they lie firmly and form the base of your fire. This creates a stable base for the fire. - Make a cross layer with smaller logs
On top of the large logs, lay a layer of slightly smaller logs, in a cross pattern. This layer helps spread the heat evenly and makes it easier for the fire to burn through all the layers later. - Add kindling and firelighters
Now spread kindling on top of the cross layer. Place one or more firelighters on top of this kindling. Be careful not to put them too far down, as lighting is done from above! - Light the fire from above
The special thing about the Swiss method is that you light the fire from the top, so light your firelighters and let the fire burn slowly downward. This prevents you from getting smoke that has to go through a cold chimney and ensures that the smoke is burned immediately.
Tips for efficient burning
- Keep the door open for a while
After lighting the fire, leave the door ajar for a few minutes for adequate oxygen, then close it tightly. - Only add wood when ash bed
Wait until the wood is completely burned out and an ash bed has formed. This ensures a controlled burn. - Keep air supply open
Leave the air supply open during burning so the fire gets good oxygen. - Cool down with the door closed
Let the fire burn out and cool down with the door closed and the air supply open.
The advantages
With this method of firing, you contribute to a cleaner environment and enjoy a cleaner fireplace with a clear window yourself. Through more efficient combustion, you need less wood, save on costs, and enjoy a crackling and comfortable fire longer.
