Sustainability in every flame: choosing an eco-conscious wood fireplace

29/10/2024

Atmosphere, coziness and warmth: these are the main reasons to choose a wood fire in your home. But with the increasing focus on a greener future, you may be wondering if a wood fire is still a responsible choice. We'd like to answer the three most frequently asked questions about wood fires and environmental friendliness.

Is wood burning really that bad for the environment?

To put your mind at ease: the negative coverage of wood burning is mainly about open fireplaces, not closed wood fireplaces such as the elevator door fireplaces or closed built-in fireplaces from M-Design. These modern wood-burning fireplaces use innovative technologies that enable much cleaner combustion .

Wood is C02 neutral. What exactly does that mean?

Wood is a renewable energy source and is considered CO2 neutral. This means that the CO2 released from burning wood is equal to the CO2 absorbed by the tree as it grew. Planting new trees reabsorbs this CO2, making the process sustainable. Be sure to choose wood from forests with sustainable management.

Dead trees and wood residues in forests also release CO2. By using these scraps as fuel, we reduce the CO2 that would otherwise be released into the air.

So what about particulate matter emissions?

Unlike open fireplaces, enclosed wood fireplaces use advanced combustion techniques that significantly reduce particulate emissions. M-Design's closed wood fireplaces are designed with the future in mind and comply with the strict European Ecodesign Directive. These fireplaces have an efficiency of at least 75% and emit no more than 40 mg/m³ of particulate matter. In comparison, an open fire has an efficiency of only 15 to 20%.

Get advice for the best choice

Choosing the right wood fire goes beyond just picking the model; it is also important to have it installed by a licensed installer who will tailor the installation to your personal living situation. Our selected dealers will be happy to help you choose the right appliance with the right output for your space.

Too low a capacity will of course result in too little heat, but too high a capacity can lead to an inefficient combustion process with higher emissions. M-Design's modern combustion technologies ensure efficient combustion at high temperatures, so you need less wood and release less particulate matter and soot.

When choosing your ideal wood-burning fireplace, be well advised by our expert dealers. That way you can make a conscious, sustainable choice for the future and fully enjoy the warmth and cosiness of a wood fire in your home.
