The best wood for your wood-burning fire: Tips and advice!
04/11/2024
Modern wood fires today are much more environmentally friendly than they used to be, and our Diamond collection is even an ecological topper: durable, economical and easy to use. But to get the most out of your wood fire, it is essential to choose the right wood. So how do you choose the best wood for an optimal fireplace?
Why dry wood is crucial
The most important aspect of choosing firewood is that the wood must be well dry. In fact, freshly cut wood can contain up to 50% moisture, whereas for efficient combustion and optimal heat output, you want a moisture content of about 15%. This means that wood often needs months, and sometimes even longer, to dry before it is ready for use. Preferably put your wood outside in a dry, covered place where the wind can blow through it well. For those who don't feel like waiting months, there is also the option of buying kiln-dried wood. This wood has reached the ideal moisture content within a few days.

The best types of wood for your fireplace
In terms of wood species, there are a few that are particularly suitable for the wood fireplace: birch, ash, oak and alder. Birch wood is known for its clean burning and high heat output, while ash and oak burn slower because they are hardwoods. Oak is one of the most popular choices for fireplaces because of its long burn time, minimal smoke and crackling flames. However, keep in mind that oak needs to dry for up to two years if you cut it yourself. Alder, on the other hand, burns faster but also gives off a lot of heat immediately.
Wood types best avoided
What is better not to burn in your wood fire is treated or preserved wood. This is because wood that has been painted, varnished, or otherwise treated can release harmful substances that are bad for both the environment and your health. Wood with a lot of resin is also not a good choice, as it creates more soot in the chimney and splashes faster.
With the right wood, you will enjoy a clean, warm and cozy fire. Choose wisely and enjoy the full benefits of your wood fireplace!
